Every day, AlloCiné suggests a film to watch or rewatch on TV. Tonight’s pick: an award-winning, brilliant fantasy thriller from the Cannes Film Festival.
Maureen, a young American in Paris, manages the wardrobe of a celebrity. It’s a job she dislikes, but it pays for her stay while she waits for a sign from Lewis, her recently deceased twin brother. Soon, she starts receiving mysterious anonymous messages on her cell phone…
This enigmatic premise belongs to Personal Shopper, marking the second collaboration between French filmmaker Olivier Assayas and American actress Kristen Stewart, more than two years after Sils Maria. Awarded for Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival, this eerie ghost story blurs the lines between drama, thriller, and fantasy, led by a compelling performance from Stewart that will surely capture your attention.
With Personal Shopper, Assayas creates a disturbing and mesmerizing atmosphere, pushing further into the realm of fantasy. “I wanted to see what would happen if I fully embraced the challenge of addressing a recurring question: the intimate, profound ability of cinema to capture the invisible,” the director explains. “Making it the subject of a film allowed me to explore this idea through elements of genre cinema without it being purely theoretical.”
Kristen Stewart in Nearly Every Frame
One of the major highlights of Personal Shopper, which straddles various genres, is undoubtedly its lead actress, Kristen Stewart, who appears in nearly every scene. “I wanted to convey that Maureen is a twin, searching for the lost complementarity with her deceased brother,” the unforgettable Twilight star commented on her role. “So, I imagined her with a very simple, almost androgynous look.”
“Her appearance also reflects her love/hate relationship with the fashion world. Thus, the choice of clothing was very crucial,” Stewart continues. “As for preparing for the film, I read the script only once and refuse to revisit it because I want to discover the scenes afresh each day of shooting. I didn’t have anything particular to learn for this film.”
