When Martin Scorsese isn’t directing a new film, he sometimes steps in front of the camera. This is the case for Julian Schnabel’s “In The Hand of Dante,” where he appears completely transformed! Here’s the first photo.
Julian Schnabel’s latest film, “In The Hand of Dante” (known for “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly,” “At Eternity’s Gate,” and others), certainly packs a punch with surprises! Following Gerard Butler, who was spotted looking drastically different on set (see below), a cinema legend is now playing against type.
In his new film, Schnabel, who has assembled an eclectic cast featuring Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa, and Gerard Butler, also directs Martin Scorsese as an actor!
The first photo of Scorsese’s look for the film was just revealed, and he is hardly recognizable!
The film follows the story of Nick Tosches, a writer. He learns that a manuscript of Dante’s “Divine Comedy,” stolen from the Vatican, has reappeared in New York. Unable to pass up this chance, Nick decides to try to authenticate the manuscript and investigate its origins, its journey, and its author.
“In The Hand of Dante” has been a long-anticipated project, previously linked to Johnny Depp over ten years ago. The filming took place in November 2023, with Johnny Depp out of the casting, replaced by Oscar Isaac. Interestingly, it was Johnny Depp himself who initially brought this project to Julian Schnabel’s attention by giving him the book “The Awakening of Buñuel” by Jean-Claude Carrière, published in 2011, which the film is adapted from.

This is Julian Schnabel’s seventh feature film, and his works have often focused on the art world. He has made films about painters like Basquiat and Van Gogh (“At Eternity’s Gate”). Schnabel is also a painter and had collaborated with Jean-Michel Basquiat.
Julian Schnabel’s most successful film in France is “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly,” featuring Mathieu Amalric, Emmanuelle Seigner, Marie-Josée Croze, and Anne Consigny, based on the life of Jean-Dominique Bauby, a journalist who, after a sudden stroke, was plunged into a deep coma. Presented in the Official Competition at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007, “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” was awarded the Best Director Prize.
No release date for the movie yet. It will compete at the Venice Film Festival in early September.
It’s worth noting that Martin Scorsese will also soon be in the news with a five-part documentary about his career on Apple TV+. A preview of this documentary can be seen above.
