Peter Jackson Broke Down Filming This ‘Lord of the Rings’ Scene 25 Years Ago!

Many scenes from the iconic trilogy moved the New Zealand filmmaker, but this particular one brought him to tears during filming.

“Is it finished?”, Sam Gamgee asks with eager eyes as he looks at the manuscript on Frodo’s desk.

“Not quite, there’s still a bit of room,” Frodo replies, a slight smile on his lips as he closes his book.

“A Beautiful Final Shot”

Taking place in the final minutes of “The Return of the King,” the last installment of Peter Jackson’s trilogy, this poignant little sequence holds a special significance for Elijah Wood, who played Frodo. It was while filming this scene that the American actor delivered his very last line of the “Lord of the Rings” series, creating a highly emotional moment on set, especially for the New Zealand director.

“A beautiful final shot,” the director declared, embracing the young actor, as shown in the movie’s bonus features.

“I will never forget it. It’s etched in my memory forever. He burst into tears, and just kept saying ‘Thank you’, over and over,” Wood recounts.

“Tears Streaming Down His Cheeks”

It’s hard, if not impossible, to remain unmoved by these archival images if you’re a fan of the Tolkien-adapted saga. But this brief exchange is not the only scene that made Peter Jackson cry.

As we learn from a video recently posted on the Youtube channel @MiddleEarthUpdates, the filmmaker also shed a few tears during the emotional confrontation between Frodo and Sam on the slope of Mount Doom, when Sam declares that he cannot carry the Ring for his master, but that he can carry him.

“I remember at one point, Peter came from behind the monitor, his glasses all fogged up, and tears streaming down his cheeks,” shared Sean Astin, who played Sam.
