With Adèle Exarchopoulos and Souheila Yacoub starring as anti-system rebels, “Planète B” sets its narrative in a thrilling dystopian future. The movie, which resonates with very current issues, is now available in theaters.
A Masterful Acting Duo
France, 2039. One night, activists pursued by the government vanish without a trace. Among them is Julia Bombarth. Upon awakening, she finds herself locked in a completely unfamiliar world: PLANÈTE B.
Alongside Souheila Yacoub (Dune: Part Two, Women on the Balcony) playing the role of Nour, a young Iraqi woman facing exile, Adèle Exarchopoulos (Blue Is the Warmest Color, Crazy Love) portrays Julia, an activist trapped in this virtual prison. Their partnership brings to life characters who are both brave and complementary, embedding the film in a suspense typical of thrillers. Their chemistry, enhanced by the accuracy of their performances, adds a deeply moving dimension to the story.
A Timely Film
Julia embodies a youth facing the collapse of the climate. “She is a modern-day resistor,” states Aude Léa Rapin, the director. “She represents resistance not just to the system but also to the extremely violent judicial response she faces throughout the movie.”
The story unfolds in a near future marked by the failure of the Paris Agreement, in a post-apocalyptic world where geopolitical crises intensify. At the borders, the death toll rises, while pesticides continue to wreak havoc. For the character of Nour, the director drew inspiration from a young Iraqi journalist forced into exile after publishing a report that displeased the ruling regime.
“It was very important for me to echo through Nour the shattered lives of those forced onto the roads of exile. I wanted to convey what it means to lose everything overnight—your identity, your profession… to become just another ‘migrant.’,” explains the director, who aims to address current issues such as eco-anxiety, migration policies, and the dangers of new technologies.
Striking Visual Immersion
With its immersive settings and striking visual effects, Planète B plunges the audience into a dystopia that is as oppressive as it is mesmerizing. Between harsh reality and dazzling virtuality, the film unfolds a modern and polished aesthetic that perfectly complements its message.
From the subtle lighting of enclosed spaces to the vast skies of the metaverse, every technical detail enhances the immersion into this captivating universe, providing an unforgettable visual and sensory experience.
While transporting us into an enthralling dystopia, Planète B urges us to urgently and hopefully rethink our present. A gem of French science fiction, now showing in theaters.
