Prime Video is crafting a modern adaptation of The Wizard of Oz titled “Dorothy”. This musical series aims to reimagine the classic tale for today’s generation.
Forget the ruby slippers and tornadoes from Victor Fleming’s iconic film! Prime Video plans to radically alter the world of The Wizard of Oz with Dorothy, a series currently in development described as a “contemporary, musical reinterpretation for young adults” of Dorothy Gale’s unexpected journey into the magical realm of Oz, we learn from Deadline.
Here, the yellow brick road symbolizes the challenges and choices facing today’s youth.
A Surprisingly Creative Team
The series is being created and produced by Gina Matthews (known for 13 Going on 30). However, the production team holds some surprises: musicians Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton are joining as executive producers, alongside Lee Metzger, Grant Scharbo, and Patrick Moran.
“I have been in love with The Wizard of Oz books since I was a child“, Gina Matthews shares with Deadline. “The story reminds us of the qualities we need to navigate tough times, and Dorothy is a symbol of strength showing us that with a little kindness—and a lot of courage—we can not only achieve great things but also uplift those around us.“
Riding the Wave of Wicked
This project follows the critical and commercial success of Wicked in theaters, starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. With a rating of 3.6 out of 5 on AlloCiné and $305 million in global box office revenue, the film has revitalized interest in the Oz universe. Dorothy could capitalize on this resurgence, offering a new gateway into this timeless magical world.
