With the U.S. elections only five days away, Democrats continue to stress the severe risks to women should Republican nominee Donald Trump secure another presidential term, amid rising concerns about women dying from abortion restrictions. Additionally, voters in 10 states are poised to decide on measures aimed at safeguarding abortion rights.
However, a recent ad that exploded in popularity on social media this Thursday argues that the far-right MAGA movement’s potential takeover of the White House and Congress should also concern men.
Created by the Democratic political action committee Progress Action Fund, the ad begins with a young couple in the midst of a sexual encounter.
After they finish, the man notices that the condom he was using has broken.
“Oh, I have Plan B in the bathroom,” the woman responds, referring to the emergency contraceptive pill approved by the FDA in 1999.
As the man goes to retrieve the pill, he experiences another alarming realization upon closing the medicine cabinet.
“Sorry,” a balding man announces, appearing in the bathroom. “You can’t use that… I’m your Republican congressman. We’ve banned Plan B now that we’re in power.”
“No, you can’t do this,” the young man protests. “I’m not ready to be a father!”
The lawmaker insists that since his party won the last election, the decision about having a child is no longer up to the couple.
“It’s my decision,” he declares. “Now let’s go tell her the news… Daddy.”
The progressive advocacy group DemCast emphasized that the ad is a must-see for “every man in America.”
“The only way to secure our privacy rights is to vote for Democrats,” the group stated. “They aren’t interested in forcing men into fatherhood before they’re ready.”
Eleven Films, the production company, commented that the ad sheds light on the notion that “MAGA wants to dictate every aspect of your life, including when you become a parent.”
“Yeah, dude,” remarked the organization. “Even you.”
Nick Knudsen, co-founder and executive director of DemCast, mentioned that the ad “shifted under-30 men’s support away from Donald Trump by over 2 points” in tests.
Common Dreams could not verify this claim independently as of this writing.
The political action committee Defend the Vote collaborated with Progress Action Fund to broadcast the ad in key battleground states.
“We’re down to the last few days before the election,” the group announced. “Go out and vote to defend your liberties!”
Democratic strategist Alicia Strohl Resnicoff remarked that the ad, and its reminder of the Republican Party’s goal to undermine reproductive freedoms, including access to both abortion and contraception, “might be the most terrifying thing you see today.”
