Smarter Than You Think: This 80s Actress Waitressed with Sandra Bullock!

Before they were famous, Jennifer Coolidge and Sandra Bullock were once colleagues at a restaurant, where one ended up taking the other’s job—in a manner of speaking! Jennifer Coolidge recently shared this funny blast from the past.

Before their rise to stardom, Jennifer Coolidge and Sandra Bullock worked together at a restaurant in the 1980s, until Bullock ended up taking Coolidge’s shifts because Coolidge was too busy partying!

Years later, Coolidge humorously reflected on their shared work experience, explaining how Sandra Bullock eventually figured everything out and how she knew the ‘Speed’ star was going to make it big in Hollywood.

In a 2022 interview with Entertainment Weekly, the star of ‘The White Lotus’ opened up about her career’s recent trajectory. “(…) It’s really hard to go through life maintaining hope when you’re not entirely happy with the direction you’ve taken,” she said.

“I think about those jobs where you just can’t hang on, and I feel like this unexpected thing that happened to me could happen to anyone,” she continued. “You’re driving at full speed, the same speed for years, and then suddenly, something great happens. I think I’m a perfect example of ‘What are the odds?’. And it could happen to anyone,” she added.

Indeed, before breaking into the industry, Jennifer Coolidge worked five years as a cocktail waitress—though she didn’t show up to work that much…

Bullock Takes Over Coolidge’s Work

In 2022, Coolidge recounted how despite often leaving her post to party, management didn’t fire her. Sandra Bullock, meanwhile, was also working there as a hostess and had everything under control.

“Sandra really had everything under control,” Coolidge stated on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’, hinting that it was the complete opposite for her, who “partied a lot back then”.

Years earlier, in 2003, she told Conan O’Brien that Sandra Bullock ended up taking her weekend cocktail waitress shifts because she simply didn’t show up for hers, forcing her to quit.

“I was so angry that Sandra got those hours. But I wasn’t there,” she explained, adding that she held no grudges against the actress.

Coolidge’s Insights on Sandra Bullock

Jennifer Coolidge also remembered feeling at the time that her colleague was destined for success: “She’s going to go so far!” she exclaimed, noting that Bullock was also “incredibly kind” and “had a much better grasp of the business” than she did. “She was much smarter,” Coolidge explained. “She was running things at 30” (via IndieWire).

Bullock “left early and had it all figured out,” according to the ‘American Pie’ actress, who added: “She really thought she could do her own thing.”

Unlike the ‘Miss Congeniality’ star, Coolidge hadn’t yet realized that to succeed in Hollywood, “you need to know the business”: “I never really asked myself those questions. It never occurred to me to start my own thing. I was waiting for someone to give me opportunities instead of creating them.”
