Stranger Things: How Jamie Campbell Bower Prepped for Vecna Role in Season 5 with Co-Star’s Help

Jamie Campbell Bower, known for his role as Vecna in Stranger Things, talks about his intensive physical and mental preparation required to embody the show’s main antagonist.

Regardless of what one thinks about the Stranger Things finale, there’s nearly universal agreement among fans about Jamie Campbell Bower’s stellar performance. The British actor brought to life the series’ formidable villain, Henry Creel, and his monstrous alter ego, Vecna.

An Iconic Movie Villain Inspired Vecna

Unsurprisingly, the role required immense physical preparation, including up to seven hours of makeup each day of filming. This was a necessary evil to bring Vecna, whose appearance mirrors his deeply malevolent nature, to life. One of the significant challenges for Jamie Campbell Bower was finding the right voice for the character.

“The script described his voice as deep and booming, so I needed to find the truth in that,” he told Rolling Stone. “Of course, I could have done a typical monster voice, and it would have worked. But there was something about this role, and where I was artistically at that time, that pushed me to feel every moment fully. His voice had to come from a place that was deeply true.”

At the request of the Duffer brothers, Jamie Campbell Bower drew inspiration from Doug Bradley’s performance in the renowned horror saga Hellraiser. This effort resulted in Vecna’s “precise, measured” speech pattern. However, preparing for the role also demanded a particularly strenuous mental effort from the English actor.

Physical Preparation and… Musical Inspiration!

“At the beginning of my preparation, I was listening to folk or black metal, but as time went on, the music became harder and faster,” shares Bower, who is also the lead singer of the punk rock band Counterfeit. “Right before filming, I was almost in the mindset of a boxer getting ready to step into the ring.”

Jamie Campbell Bower also reveals to his peers that the play Stranger Things: The First Shadow greatly helped him get back into character before shooting season 5. Deeply moved by Louis McCartney’s portrayal of Henry Creel in the play, the English actor stepped in for a one-time performance — a surprise appearance that stirred up social media.

Is This the End of Vecna?

Despite the mixed reactions to the finale, Vecna’s portrayer does not hide his pride in having been part of such an adventure (the interview was conducted before the last episode aired):

Honestly, I can’t even remember how many pages the final episode was, but it’s a tremendous culmination for a series that has followed viewers and actors alike from childhood. It’s not often you get to be part of a project like this.

His next challenge is already known. After the world of Hawkins, he’s set to join the universe of The Lord of the Rings. Jamie Campbell Bower has just finished filming the third season of The Rings of Power, in a role that remains a secret for now. Many fans also hope to see him reprise his role in the upcoming Stranger Things spin-off currently in development.
