Released in 1992, “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle” was part of the wave of domestic thrillers that swept through cinemas during that decade. A remake is currently in the works starring Maika Monroe from “Longlegs”.
“Chilling, disturbing, frightening“. These were the words emblazoned on the poster for Curtis Hanson’s “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle”, one of the most iconic thrillers of the 1990s. Deadline reports that a remake is currently in production featuring Maika Monroe, who rose to fame in 2014 with the horror film “It Follows”.
In the original, Rebecca De Mornay – discovered in “Risky Business” alongside Tom Cruise – played a widow who blames a young family for her husband’s suicide. To exact her revenge, she becomes their nanny and insidiously works her way into the relationship between the mother and her infant.
“The Hand That Rocks the Cradle” was a significant success in the 1990s and is a classic example of the domestic thriller genre, alongside films like “Fatal Attraction,” “Sleeping with the Enemy,” and “Single White Female”.
An Actress Well-Versed in Thrillers
Described as a “fresh take“, the remake will be directed by Michelle Garza Cervera. The Mexican filmmaker caught attention in 2022 with her film “Huesera,” which depicted the nightmarish pregnancy of an expectant mother.
Actress Maika Monroe, who is cast in the lead role, is no stranger to the thriller genre. This year, she starred in Osgood Perkins’s “Longlegs,” a thriller reminiscent of “The Silence of the Lambs” with an unrecognizable Nicolas Cage. The film was both a critical and commercial hit in the United States.
“The Hand That Rocks the Cradle” coming soon to theaters.
