Yellowstone Shocker: Did You Spot This Dexter Star in 1923 Season 2?

This week introduced a fresh face in Season 2 of 1923, the prequel to Yellowstone. We meet Deputy Sheriff Mamie Fossett, a new character on the show.

Deputy Fossett was approached by Marshal Kent and Father Renaud, who are on the trail of Teonna Rainwater after her bloody escape from the boarding school for Native American girls.

Jennifer Carpenter, an American actress famous for her role as Debra Morgan in Dexter, portrays Mamie Fossett in the series.

Her role in this Yellowstone prequel marks a significant return to the spotlight, playing a character based on a real historical figure.

“I managed to find about ten sentences written about the real Mamie Fossett,” Jennifer Carpenter shared with the Hollywood Reporter.

“She probably came to this territory hoping to set up a farm, but for one reason or another, it didn’t work out. So, she became a U.S. Marshal… which at the time was the most dangerous job one could have.”

A Childhood Dream for Jennifer Carpenter

To prepare for the role, the American actress researched the era and read several novels set in the 1920s, including Empire of the Summer Moon by S.C. Gwynne and the Lonesome Dove series by Larry McMurtry.

“I just wanted to immerse myself in the ambiance of the era, but my goodness, what fantastic reading,” she remarked.

The western series not only breaks from her previous roles but also fulfills a childhood dream. It’s a new challenge that Jennifer Carpenter was eager to take on, despite the pressure it involves.

Fortunately, the high-quality script written by Taylor Sheridan (the creator of the Yellowstone franchise) made her job easier: “It was the most relaxed, rich, and purest ground I’ve ever had to till. This is what I dreamt of when I said I wanted to be an actress at 8 years old.”

New episodes of Season 2 of 1923 are released weekly exclusively on Paramount+.
