Tron Ares Revitalizes Sci-Fi Saga: How It Rekindles Interest After a Forgotten Film!

Fifteen years after the release of “Tron: Legacy”, Disney is reviving its sci-fi saga with a third installment, “Tron Ares”, which partially takes place in our real world.

In an era dominated by technological upheaval, notably driven by advancements in artificial intelligence, the Tron universe is making a comeback. Under the direction of Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Rønning, known for his work on major studio productions like the fifth “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil”, Disney is rolling out the third chapter in its science-fiction saga.

Starring Jared Leto, “Tron Ares” follows the 1982 original and its 2010 sequel “Tron: Legacy”, which, despite not being a box office failure, quickly fell into obscurity—despite its groundbreaking Daft Punk soundtrack and massive special effects. This time around, Disney has enlisted another iconic music group, Nine Inch Nails, known for their blend of metal, rock, and electronic sounds. Their successful score excellently complements the film’s visual universe.

A significant change in “Tron Ares” is that much of the action takes place in our world. The plot bridges humanity with beings endowed with artificial intelligence, leading to many action sequences being shot in real-world settings.

Filmed in Real Locations

“We filmed in the city, which is unusual for this type of movie,” Jodie Turner-Smith shared excitedly in an interview with AlloCiné. “We also shot in front of LED Volumes, a technology consisting of large screens that recreate an urban landscape. Unlike the stereotypes, I didn’t have to pretend a tennis ball was another actor.”

Greta Lee adds, “I did it for one scene! I had to stare at a piece of tape and imagine it was my deceased sister, I call that tape acting. But it’s thrilling to work in such a way.”

She continues, “It was my first time acting in a sci-fi film. I spent a lot of time running. I’ll admit I Googled ‘Tom Cruise running’ because I had never done anything like it before.”

The Perils of AI

A major theme in “Tron Ares” is artificial intelligence, a topic always present in science fiction but taking on new significance today. While Hollywood has expressed concerns over AI-created actress Tilly Norwood, actors remain optimistic about the future of cinema amidst technological threats:

“I don’t think AI will replace actors,” says Greta Lee. “People want to experience something real at the movies, something they can touch and feel. After all, the best films are those that connect us to people.”
