Following the news of the “return” of the late Val Kilmer in a role entirely crafted by artificial intelligence, here’s the trailer for “As Deep as the Grave”.
The announcement made waves. Having passed away from pneumonia at the age of 65 on April 1, 2025, Val Kilmer will be featured in a final film, As Deep as the Grave by Coerte Voorhees, thanks to artificial intelligence. This decision was supported by the actor’s family.
The trailer, which was just unveiled at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, showcases the outcome. In 2020, five years before his death, Kilmer was cast in this project as a priest. Already battling throat cancer at the time, Kilmer was unable to fulfill his contract and attend the shooting. Although he did not film any scene for this particular movie, he will indeed appear in his role.
How Was Val Kilmer’s AI Created?
Screenwriter and director Coerte Voorhees turned to generative artificial intelligence with the authorization of Kilmer’s daughter, Mercedes. Old photos of the actor and more recent images before his death, all provided by the Kilmer family, were used to develop the tool.
“His family kept saying how important the film was and that Val really wanted to be part of it,” the filmmaker explained in Variety. “It’s this support that gave me the confidence to say, ‘Okay, let’s do this.’ Even though some might call it controversial, it’s what Val wanted.”
As Deep as the Grave tells the true story of archaeologists Ann and Earl Morris from the American Southwest, and chronicles their excavations in Canyon de Chelly, Arizona, aimed at tracing the history of the Navajo people. The cast also includes Abigail Breslin and Tom Felton.
The film does not yet have a release date.
