Zack Snyder Still Defends His DC Film as the Best Batman 10 Years Later!

During an episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, celebrating the 10-year anniversary of his polarizing film “Batman Vs Superman,” director Zack Snyder passionately defended his movie, particularly Ben Affleck’s portrayal of the Caped Crusader.

Appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast to mark a decade since the release of Batman Vs Superman, director Zack Snyder spoke candidly. Despite facing a barrage of criticism, the film managed to gross $874 million worldwide, hardly a failure. This movie was a follow-up to the equally controversial Man of Steel, which had sparked outrage among comic book fans by showing Superman killing Zod.

“Ben is the Best Bruce Wayne”

Batman Vs Superman also marked Ben Affleck’s first appearance in the Batman suit, a casting decision that sparked much debate. “I did a sketch where I took Ben’s face and added the mask,” Snyder explained. “It might sound silly, but I literally took a marker and drew the mask on a photocopy of Ben’s face. I guess I convinced myself then that he was the right choice.”

Snyder continues to stand by his casting choice, and not just mildly: “In my opinion, he’s the most obvious Bruce Wayne of all the Batmans. Out of all who have played Batman, Ben is the best Bruce Wayne,” he stated. Such comments might stir some die-hard fans of Michael Keaton’s performances, gently glossing over the portrayals by Val Kilmer or George Clooney.

Snyder added: “He also embodies everything I love about Batman. He’s really a big guy, right? He stands at 6’5″ with his boots on. He has that physical stature I’ve always wanted for my cinematic Batman. I always wanted him to be a brawler. That was necessary. Even with what I did with the body, the suit, and everything else, I wanted him to be sturdy. I just wanted him to really be able to do some damage.”

“Is This Really What You Want?”

As for the criticism of his film, “My 100% honest reaction about Batman Vs Superman and how it was received globally is… Do you really want a movie that has been smoothed over by focus groups? Do you really want a movie where decisions were made in a corporate boardroom? Ideas tested and calibrated for your enjoyment? Do you really want a story sold in supermarkets? Is this really what you want?” Snyder questioned.

Nevertheless, the Snyder Verse ended before the filmmaker could produce two other Justice League films. He hasn’t given up, as he noted in the podcast: “We absolutely talked about it,” mentioning that these projects might come to life in some form, perhaps as a comic book or an animated movie. “We live in a world where all this is possible.”

It remains to be seen how this will align with James Gunn, who now has significant control over DC decisions at Warner. Unless, of course, his position is jeopardized by the pending acquisition of Warner by Paramount. But that’s another story…
