Inspired by a novel which itself draws from Kafka’s “Metamorphosis,” the thriller “Kockroach,” featuring Chris Hemsworth and Taron Egerton, will begin shooting next week in Australia under the direction of Matt Ross (“Captain Fantastic”).
Matt Ross, who last directed the acclaimed “Captain Fantastic” starring Viggo Mortensen over a decade ago, has assembled an impressive cast for his new film, “Kockroach.” Based on the 2007 novel of the same name by William Lashner, the thriller stars Chris Hemsworth, Taron Egerton, Zazie Beetz, and Alec Baldwin, with Rachel Sennott recently added to the cast in a supporting role, as reported by Deadline.
Although the story is set in New York City, filming will commence in Australia starting next week. The film follows a mysterious stranger who infiltrates the criminal underworld of the Big Apple, emerging as an unconventional mafia boss in a city ruled by power.
A Reimagining of a Kafka Classic
In Lashner’s novel, the protagonist is a cockroach that turns into a human, the opposite scenario from Kafka’s literary classic “Metamorphosis,” in which a man is transformed into a cockroach. This fantastical element is expected to be a key aspect of the film as well.
Originally, Channing Tatum and Oscar Isaac were slated to play the lead roles in “Kockroach,” but scheduling conflicts prevented their involvement. The film’s producer, Andrew Lazar, has described it as being in the same vein as “Goodfellas” and “Scarface.”
While awaiting this intriguing story, Chris Hemsworth is currently making waves on Prime Video in the thriller “Crime 101” alongside Marvel co-star Mark Ruffalo. Meanwhile, his future co-star Taron Egerton will soon be seen in a tense showdown with Charlize Theron in “Apex” on Netflix starting April 24.
