Following Gundam, the anime and toy franchise Bakugan is set to receive its own live-action adaptation by Brad Peyton, the director known for “San Andreas” and “Rampage.”
As reported by Deadline, Spin Master Corp. is currently developing a live-action Bakugan feature film with filmmaker Brad Peyton, who is slated to direct, write, and produce the movie. Peyton is collaborating with Lindsay Harbert on the screenplay, which draws inspiration from the globally popular toy line and anime franchise that launched in 2007 and has generated over a billion dollars in 18 years.
The Bakugan franchise revolves around small spherical figures that transform into creatures when rolled onto special cards. The original TV series follows Dan Kuso, whose life changes overnight when mysterious cards fall from the sky, and he and his friend Shun use one to invent a game called “Bakugan.” Along with other friends, they form a group known as the “Bakugan Battle Brawlers,” who find themselves accidentally involved in a battle for the fate of Vestroia, the home dimension of the Bakugans.
The franchise includes toys, several animated adventure series, digital content, and a popular card game based on strategy. Nearly 300 television episodes have been broadcast in over 100 countries worldwide.
In an official statement, Brad Peyton expressed his enthusiasm for the project: “Bakugan is ripe for the big screen, and I am thrilled to be the one to bring it to theaters for the first time. With Lindsay and the Spin Master team by my side, we are excited to build a successful franchise with global appeal. I am confident that we will create a cinematic event that will do justice to the unique and epic world of Bakugan.”
Spin Master’s upcoming feature film slate also includes a third Paw Patrol movie set for release in 2026. Meanwhile, Brad Peyton has recently directed the science-fiction film Atlas featuring Jennifer Lopez and Simu Liu, which was released on Netflix in May and is available on the platform.
The live-action Bakugan film is not expected to be released before 2027.
