Before his big return in “Daredevil: Born Again”, let’s look back at the conclusion of the series that originated on Netflix. Filled with confrontations and revelations, here’s how Matt Murdock’s story wrapped up.
Daredevil, a Marvel series that premiered on Netflix from 2015 to 2018, marked a milestone for superhero adaptations with its dark and gritty tone. Centered on Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), a blind lawyer with extraordinary abilities, the series captivated fans with its polished writing, thrilling fight scenes, and iconic antagonist, Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio). After its cancellation by Netflix, it moved to Disney+ and will soon experience a rebirth with Daredevil: Born Again, a sequel/revival that promises to plunge the Hell’s Kitchen vigilante into new challenges.
Matt Murdock, a Broken Hero Seeking Redemption
Following the cataclysmic events of The Defenders, Matt Murdock is presumed dead. In reality, he barely survives and seeks refuge in a convent, where he is cared for by Sister Maggie Grace.
Sister Maggie, who is later revealed to be his biological mother, tries to bring him back to his senses and faith, as the vigilante struggles more than ever. Meanwhile, Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) and Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) cling to the hope of seeing their friend again, though uncertainty remains.
Despite his physical and mental wounds, Matt returns to his role as Daredevil. However, he forsakes his iconic red suit for a more subdued outfit, reminiscent of his early days. His fight becomes more brutal, driven by an increasing obsession: to destroy Wilson Fisk once and for all.
The Return of the Kingpin: A Greater Threat Than Ever
Wilson Fisk, also known as the Kingpin, manages to manipulate the FBI to regain his freedom. Settled in a luxurious penthouse, he pulls strings from the shadows and corrupts FBI agent Benjamin Poindexter (Wilson Bethel), nicknamed Dex.
Dex, unstable and easily manipulated, adopts the identity of Daredevil under Fisk’s orders to discredit the real vigilante. Poindexter, who will later become Bullseye, massacres innocents while wearing the costume of the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen, casting doubt among the populace.
When Karen is targeted by this false Daredevil, Matt intervenes just in time to save her. The confrontation leads to tragedy: Father Lantom, Matt’s mentor, dies while stepping in to protect Karen.
Meanwhile, agent Ray Nadeem (Jay Ali), who uncovers the extent of the FBI’s corruption orchestrated by Fisk, attempts to reveal the truth. His public testimony finally exposes the Kingpin’s crimes, but it costs him his life.
The Ultimate Battle: Daredevil vs. Wilson Fisk and Bullseye
In the final episode, titled “A New Napkin,” Matt Murdock is determined to end things with Fisk. Driven by anger and vengeance, he confronts the Kingpin on the day of his wedding to Vanessa Marianna (Ayelet Zurer).
Poindexter, betrayed by Fisk, also decides to turn against him. However, the confrontation leaves Dex severely injured and paralyzed by Fisk.
The showdown between Daredevil and the Kingpin is intense. Overcome by rage, Matt nearly kills Fisk but ultimately regains his composure, reaffirming his deep-seated convictions.
Instead of executing him, he offers a deal: if Fisk agrees to go to prison without revealing his identity or threatening his loved ones, Vanessa will be spared. Forced, Fisk agrees and surrenders to the authorities, ending his reign of terror.
A Memorable Ending and an Uncertain Future
After so many trials, Matt Murdock finally reunites with Karen and Foggy. Together, they decide to rebuild their lives and consider relaunching their law firm under the name “Nelson, Murdock & Page”.
The episode ends on a note of hope, while leaving some mysteries unresolved. Dex, severely injured, undergoes an experimental operation that hints at his complete transformation into Bullseye. As for Matt, while he appears to have found some balance, his fight against crime is far from over.
With the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again, it’s clear that the story of the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen is not yet finished.
