Is Daredevil Born Again a reboot, revival, or a direct sequel to the Netflix series? As the show makes its debut on Disney+, we delve into this crucial question.
In just two days, Disney+ subscribers will have the chance to watch the first two episodes of Daredevil Born Again, a revival of the Marvel superhero. This marks the character’s return since his last appearance in his own series on Netflix in 2018. Naturally, this raises a significant question: Are the two series connected?
A Familiar Feeling
In 2022, Disney announced the return of Daredevil, choosing to adapt Born Again, a storyline well-known among fans of the red-suited superhero as it follows Matt Murdock’s resurgence after a significant downfall. Marvel aimed to distinctly separate this series from the notably more violent Netflix series, especially since the split between the two American giants wasn’t amicable. However, a direct connection remains, as Charlie Cox returns to portray Daredevil, alongside Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin, and Jon Bernthal as the Punisher, though they are the only returnees.
Marvel then introduced new characters from the universe who add to the dynamics between the heroes and their ultimate showdown. But as typical in Hollywood, things didn’t go as planned. After six episodes were completed, an actors and writers strike halted all productions, including Daredevil. This pause allowed Marvel’s top executives to review the footage, and they were not pleased with the results.
By October 2023, it was revealed that directors and writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman were let go. Dario Scardapane, who previously worked on the Punisher, was brought in as their replacement, tasked with starting over from scratch.
Following these changes, Marvel announced the return of nearly all the characters from the Netflix series, including Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll), Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson), Bullseye (Wilson Bethel), and Vanessa Fisk (Ayelet Zurer).
A Direct Continuation
While the style of Born Again mirrors the Netflix Daredevil series, it remains to be seen if the substance does as well. The first trailer, surprisingly violent for a Marvel production, confirmed that this sequel will maintain its dark tone. This is a logical choice, considering the character of the Hell’s Kitchen Devil and his intense passion for safeguarding his city. As for Fisk, he remains a formidable foe capable of destroying an adversary with a single punch.
Born Again serves as a direct sequel to the Netflix series – they even share the same title sequence – and the action takes place several years after the events of season 3. Newcomers might find themselves a bit lost in this world, particularly if they’re unfamiliar with the history between Murdock and Fisk, or the Punisher’s origin story. Meanwhile, longtime fans might feel the need to revisit the Netflix series to refresh their memories.
