It earned Leonardo DiCaprio his first and only Oscar and captivated audiences with its iconic bear attack scene. “The Revenant” is making a return to theaters.
In 2016, Leonardo DiCaprio finally clinched his first Best Actor Oscar after four unsuccessful nominations. Released in 2015, “The Revenant” secured a total of three awards from its twelve nominations, including Best Director for Alejandro González Iñárritu and Best Cinematography. The re-release of “The Revenant” in theaters provides a fresh opportunity to experience this modern Western that has become a cultural phenomenon.
The production of “The Revenant,” which started in October 2014 in Canada, quickly became a grueling challenge: temperatures plunging to -30 °C, shooting exclusively in natural light, and facing extreme weather conditions—factors that place this film alongside “Apocalypse Now” and “Sorcerer” in the annals of most strenuous film shoots. However, it was one particular scene that caught the audience’s attention the most.
The Bear Scene: A Grueling Shoot for DiCaprio
Endlessly discussed on social media, the bear attack scene emerged as one of the most memorable cinematic moments of the decade. Yet, behind this brutal and visceral scene was an enormous effort. The bear itself was nonexistent: it was Canadian stuntman Glenn Ennis who brought the creature to life. You might not recognize his name, but his resume speaks volumes: “I, Robot,” “Man of Steel,” “Fantastic Four,” and he was even the stunt double for Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa) in “Game of Thrones.” For “The Revenant,” he performed wearing a blue suit and a plastic bear head, with the scenes later being completely reworked by computer by the teams at ILM.
Although the bear was virtual, the danger was very real. With no stunt double for the majority of the shots, Leonardo DiCaprio was tossed around using cables attached to a fake tree. He was thrown against surfaces, rolled, and jostled for long hours of shooting in -30 °C. Glenn Ennis, meanwhile, had to move like a grizzly while adapting to the unpredictable movements of the actor. Both men delivered an extraordinary physical performance.
The film won the hearts of critics and audiences alike, earning a rating of 4.2 stars on AlloCiné—the highest rated in Leonardo DiCaprio’s filmography.
