Marvel Star Rumored to Be Disney’s Next Prince Charming – Is He Your Barbie?

Disney is actively developing a live-action film centered on Prince Charming, a supporting yet crucial character in the studio’s animated classics. A well-known actor beloved by fans is currently in talks for the role.

Last week, we reported that Paul King, the director behind Paddington and Wonka, is set to direct a new Disney live-action film focusing on Prince Charming. However, it wasn’t specified which Prince this would be.

Today, according to TheInsneider, Chris Hemsworth, known for his role as Thor in the MCU, is negotiating to star as the film’s hero. However, Disney has not yet confirmed this information.

The details of the film’s plot, co-written by Paul King, Simon Farnaby, and Jon Croker, have not been revealed. But the involvement of Paul King should reassure audiences.

Filming is expected to take place in the second half of 2025.

The Transformation of Prince Charming

Prince Charming has been a staple in Disney’s animated classics, and although his role is often secondary, he remains the “savior” of the heroine in the early films.

Over the years, the character of the Prince, initially quite passive as he simply woke the princess with a kiss (Sleeping Beauty, Snow White), has gradually become more substantial (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast), before disappearing from the latest Disney films (Brave, Frozen, Moana…).

This evolution mirrors societal changes. While early versions of the Prince highlighted a savior prince, later films feature more balanced relationships, where male and female protagonists are equals. Nowadays, heroines are no longer looking to be saved.

This shift is noted by Rachel Zegler, who will portray Snow White in the upcoming live-action version. In an announcement with Variety, she stated: “She’s not going to dream of true love. She dreams of becoming the leader she knows she can be and the leader her late father told her she could be if she was fearless, just, brave, and true.”

The announcement of a film centered on Prince Charming is thus quite surprising. It is conceivable that, similar to Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, the film might include a meta aspect that will address the character of the Prince in an ironic way and provide a commentary on gender equality.
