Robert De Niro takes on his first-ever leading role in a television series with “Zero Day,” marking another collaboration with Netflix following his performance in Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman.”
Kicking off the year, Robert De Niro stars in his first TV series “Zero Day.” At 81, the acclaimed actor has chosen Netflix for this landmark project in his illustrious career.
What’s it About?
In “Zero Day,” Robert De Niro plays a former U.S. President, George Mullen, deeply revered by the nation. Pulled out of retirement, he is tasked to lead the Zero Day Commission. His mission? To track down the perpetrators of a catastrophic cyber-attack that wreaked havoc across the country and resulted in thousands of deaths.
At the request of the current President, Evelyn Mitchell (played by Angela Bassett), he conducts a top-secret investigation. This daunting task forces him to confront his own secrets and could cost him everything dear to him.
A High-Stakes Thriller
From the synopsis and the trailer, it’s clear that “Zero Day” fits squarely in the conspiracy thriller genre. The series seems to echo the vibe of “Homeland,” which isn’t surprising since its six episodes are helmed by Lesli Linka Glatter, a key figure in the production of “Homeland” with 25 episodes under her belt.
The trailer hints at high stakes for Mullen and his circle. The supporting cast around Robert De Niro is stellar. Alongside Angela Bassett as the current President of the United States, the series also features Jesse Plemons as a close advisor to Mullen, Lizzy Caplan as his daughter, Joan Allen as his politically ambitious wife, and other notable actors like Connie Britton and Dan Stevens.
“Zero Day” will be available on Netflix starting February 20.
