Some aspects of “Squid Game” Season 2 left fans feeling bored or let down by the South Korean series, and one of the actors acknowledges the audience’s reaction. Be warned, spoilers ahead.
Warning, spoilers ahead. It is recommended that you watch Season 2 of “Squid Game” before reading this article.
Still topping Netflix’s viewership charts, “Squid Game” has solidified its hit status with a record-setting second season, making a groundbreaking return three years after its debut season.
The audience eagerly returned to follow Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), player 456, and to meet new characters, face new games, and encounter fresh plot twists.
Season 2 of the series, created, written, and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, ventures into new territory and reveals more about the deadly game, including through the character of the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun), who infiltrates the players, and the policeman Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon).
Disappointment with a Character’s Plot in Season 2…
However, Jun-ho is sidelined from the main plot as he desperately tries to locate the island of the Squid Game years after his initial infiltration. At the end of Season 1, he had confronted the Front Man, who turned out to be his missing brother, and was presumed dead.
He is ultimately rescued by a fisherman who helps him find the island again. Jun-ho teams up with Gi-hun, who now has the resources to back his ambitions after winning the grand prize at the end of the game. Gi-hun re-enters the game to try to put an end to it, while Jun-ho, with the help of mercenaries and the fisherman—who apparently works for the Front Man—tries to take on the Front Man and the guards.
However, Season 2 is just a series of failures for Jun-ho, and his storyline does not progress much. This has frustrated “Squid Game” fans, who have expressed their disappointment and boredom on social media. Some did not understand why he did not reveal the Front Man’s identity to Gi-hun and why his search efforts were ineffective.
“I should’ve known Season 2 of Squid Game would leave me frustrated from the moment the cop didn’t tell Gi-hun that his brother is actually one of the bad guys, when one of my pet peeves is when a character doesn’t share important information for plot reasons.”
“It’s so annoying. Jun-ho could’ve just watched this video before searching for In-ho, everything would’ve been SO much easier #SquidGame2”
“Jun-ho’s segment in Squid Game Season 2 in a nutshell #SquidGame2 #SquidGame”
“I really just don’t get the point of Squid Game 2, there’s no development, it’s just them playing different games and we still don’t know anything about the Front Man and his motives, Gi Hun is mediocre, and the hot cop never makes a breakthrough.”
His Actor Agrees!
And the actor playing Jun-ho seems to agree with the audience. Wi Ha-joon spoke on this after watching Season 2 in its entirety during an interview for IMBC:
“It must have been frustrating because my character just kept facing failures over and over. I agree with the viewer’s reaction, who felt particularly bored with my character. I wondered why they handled his search in such a way when he could have obtained a submarine or looked for other leads.”
Though Wi Ha-joon understands the audience’s feelings about his character’s narrative arc in Season 2 of “Squid Game,” he was not bored during the filming. His previous military experiences were even useful for his search sequences:
“I was responsible for counter-terrorism in the military, so I was very familiar with search methods in the forest. What I did every day in the military was hold a gun and shoot. I still talk with my military buddies, and they found similarities to my time in the army while watching Squid Game.”
His outspokenness is quite bold, especially since he confirmed that his character would definitely return in Season 3. He still hopes the public will continue to find interest in his character in the upcoming final season of the series. Given his familial connection to the Front Man, his significant role in the conclusion is almost certain.
Both seasons of “Squid Game” are available on Netflix.
