In a Hollywood world often ruled by numbers, one voice has managed to break through the chaos surrounding the cancellation of Coyote vs. Acme. Will Forte, the film’s lead actor, has been outspoken about his frustration with Warner’s decision to pull the plug on this project—one that he believes deserved a better fate. The cancellation of this movie has sent ripples across the industry, leaving fans and the creative team reeling.
Coyote vs. Acme: A Film That Deserved Better
Forte, known for his roles in 30 Rock and The Last Man on Earth, was supposed to star in Coyote vs. Acme alongside John Cena. The film, a blend of live-action and animation reminiscent of classics like Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, promised a fresh spin on the iconic Looney Tunes characters. Yet, despite the potential, the project was shelved by Warner in November 2023, along with several others, in a series of cost-cutting measures driven by shifting business strategies.
In a recent conversation with MovieWeb, Forte opened up about his feelings toward the decision. “My thought is that it’s just nonsense. It’s such a charming movie. It deserved so much better than this treatment. I can’t really tell you why the decision was made to not release it, but it boils my blood,” Forte shared candidly. “And I thank you for asking about it because I love talking about this film, and I don’t want people to forget what was done to us.” It’s clear that Forte has a deep attachment to the project, and while he appreciates the chance to work on it, he can’t help but feel the sting of its abandonment.

Warner’s Shifting Strategy : The Price of a Decision
At the heart of the cancellation lies the business dynamics of a studio in flux. Warner’s decision to pull Coyote vs. Acme came at a time when the company was rethinking its approach to film production, especially in the wake of the pandemic and the rise of streaming platforms. The company had originally given the film a green light with the intention of pushing more substantial budgets into its streaming services, like Max. But when priorities shifted, the studio chose to abandon the theatrical release in favor of cutting costs.
According to industry insiders, the film’s estimated $70 million budget was a key factor in Warner’s decision. As the company transitioned its focus away from large theatrical budgets and toward streaming, it became clear that the investment in marketing and distribution was no longer a viable option. By canceling the movie, Warner could offset its financial losses with tax write-offs, a strategy often used when projects no longer align with a studio’s financial goals.
Though the film was not entirely abandoned, Warner did make the decision to shop it around to other platforms. However, despite offers from various streaming services, none were willing to match the original budget. This left the project in limbo, and Coyote vs. Acme remains in a kind of cinematic purgatory, with no clear future in sight unless there’s a major change in Warner’s leadership or the film somehow leaks online.
For Forte, the frustration is palpable. “I would understand if the final result was bad,” he added, “but it’s really great. We put our hearts into it, and to see it swept under the rug just feels wrong.” It’s hard not to sympathize with the actor, who, after pouring his energy into a project, watches as it gets sidelined for reasons that seem more financial than artistic.
As the dust settles on this disappointing chapter for both the film’s team and its fans, one can only hope that the movie finds its way into the light—whether through a change in studio leadership or some other unexpected route. After all, in the world of Hollywood drama, anything is possible.
