Instant Hit: France 3’s New Crime Drama
Debuting on October 1, 2024, “Tom & Lola” quickly became a sensation, attracting over 5 million viewers per episode. Riding on the wave of its success, the series launched its second season on November 25, continuing on France 3 with two episodes every week.
The show, produced by Sébastien Pavard (DEMD Productions – A Mediawan Company), was created by Camille Couasse and Sarah Farkas, who previously co-wrote the series “Carême” and “Nina.” It stars the formidably efficient duo of Dounia Coesens and Pierre-Yves Bon. The series not only captivates with its crime-solving plots but also the palpable chemistry between its leads. It also features three familiar faces from “Plus belle la vie”: Dounia Coesens, Élodie Varlet as a quirky forensic doctor, and Grégoire Paturel portraying a reserved young policeman, a stark contrast to his role as Luis.
With its format of one investigation per episode, “Tom & Lola” establishes itself as a dynamic, accessible, and incredibly addictive drama.
Season 1 Recap: Where Did We Leave Off?
Long-time friends, Tom and Lola are inseparable. When Tom’s wife leaves him, Lola naturally offers him to move in with her and his 14-year-old daughter, whom he shares custody of every other week. However, their living situation quickly becomes complicated, especially since Lola is already raising two strong-willed teenagers on her own…
What was supposed to be a temporary arrangement drags on, creating significant tension at home. Moreover, Tom also becomes Lola’s partner at the Judicial Police. Loving a friend’s quirks is one thing; tolerating a roommate and enduring a colleague, particularly in law enforcement, makes for a volatile mix.
By the end of Season 1, each faces a critical choice: pursue their romantic relationships—Cynthia for Tom, Guillaume for Lola—or continue the cohabitation that has become their sanctuary. Balancing a romantic relationship while living with a best friend proves challenging for their partners, and their unconventional setup collapses under societal pressures, but Tom and Lola are determined to defy conventions.
Season 2: Analyzing the First Four Episodes
This newest batch of episodes reaffirms the duo’s prowess in navigating a wide range of mysteries and settings: from the haunting mystery of a caretaker found charred in an Egyptian museum to the oddity of a tour guide who seems to call from beyond the grave after dying at the Royal Tower, the series masterfully balances classic thriller elements with almost supernatural chills.
Episodes 3 & 4 dive into the underbelly of the scientific world with the death of a professor found in a jellyfish tank, before shifting to a very contemporary issue with the discovery of an environmental activist buried under the salt of the salines, exposing tensions between activism and industrial interests.
On a personal note, Tom and Lola continue their perpetual cat-and-mouse game. As one appears ready to move on, the other falls back into old feelings. Unable to ignore or keep away from each other, they navigate a co-dependent relationship that is both endearing and tumultuous. Tom finally realizes how deep his feelings run when Lola risks her life trying to defuse a bomb during an operation. This scare acts as a wake-up call: he understands he can’t push her out of his life. He decides to stay in the shared living arrangement, at the risk of disappointing Cynthia, his ex, who hoped to rekindle their relationship.
Meanwhile, the series further explores the lives of the children in the household: for instance, Lola’s daughter Morgane runs a podcast about love where she ironically invites her mother and Tom to talk, while Alexis, the youngest, struggles with dyslexia, which severely complicates his schooling.
What to Expect in the Rest of Season 2
In Season 2, our protagonists attempt to conform to societal expectations by normalizing their respective love lives. However, for both, this effort to fit into conventional roles inevitably leads to disillusionment… Why box themselves into a social status if it means denying who they truly are? Since when must relationships between men and women be – or should be – without ambiguity? These are the central themes of this season.
Tom and Lola deeply embody characters of our times precisely because they refuse to label their relationship, continuously redefining the boundaries of friendship, love, partnership, and singlehood.
Structured as a back-and-forth between two friends torn between their desire to reattempt coupling and their need to stay true to themselves, will Tom and Lola manage to break free from each other, despite their magnetic attraction? Will these soulmates ever admit that perhaps, they are simply meant to be together?
