Top-Rated Action Flick: Predator Saga’s Best Movie Scores 3.9/5!

The renowned sci-fi saga, which revolves around a fearsome alien hunter stalking humans in hostile jungles or devastated cities, is back. For this ninth film, direction has been entrusted to Dan Trachtenberg, who also helmed Prey, the previous installment released exclusively on Disney+ in 2022.

This time, the filmmaker takes a different approach from previous episodes by placing the Predator at the center of the narrative, not merely as an antagonist, but as the main protagonist.

Predator: Badlands tells the tale of a young alien hunter banished from his clan, forced to ally with Thia, a cyborg played by Elle Fanning, on a wild planet where every moment is a fight for survival. Together, this unlikely duo faces a ruthless world in their quest for the ultimate adversary.

Nearly 40 years ago, the original Predator was released. Directed in 1987 by John McTiernan, the film starred Arnold Schwarzenegger at the height of his career, following successes like Conan the Barbarian (1982)—his first major role that truly launched his action star career—and Terminator (1984).

In it, Schwarzenegger plays Major Dutch Schaefer, the leader of an elite commando team sent on a rescue mission in the jungles of Central America. Soon, the team realizes they are not alone: an invisible alien creature, the Predator, is hunting them down one by one for sport.

Last summer, at Comic Con, Dan Trachtenberg told Deadline that he had met with Schwarzenegger, hinting that he might reprise his role as Major Dutch Schaefer, 38 years after the original film.

This action and sci-fi cinema classic, with its iconic lines, remains the fan favorite despite the eight other films released since then.

With over 22,200 ratings and nearly 870 reviews on AlloCiné, Predator scores an average rating of 3.9 out of 5, placing it at the top of the franchise.

It starts off as a typical action-packed film before turning into a grueling survival tale, featuring a brilliant script, magnificent actors, well-aged special effects, thrilling tribal music, and most importantly, McTiernan’s direction is worth its weight in gold. Turning the jungle into a character, he masterfully uses camera movements, films men sweating with fear, and presents to the astonished spectators one of the most mythical monsters in history, especially in a spectacular, apocalyptic, and Dantean finale where A. Schwarzenegger dominates with his animal magnetism, where man reverts to his primal, beastly side to survive against an overly advanced technological threat. In short, it’s a bloody, masterfully controlled, ultra-spectacular film that sets the standard for the genre.”
