With a record-breaking global box office debut, “Moana 2” has exceeded all expectations. Is Disney already planning a sequel?
Having already amassed $405 million at the international box office and attracted 2.27 million viewers in French theaters in just one week, “Moana 2” is on track to reach unprecedented heights. According to industry experts, the Disney film could potentially surpass “Inside Out 2”, released last June, to become the most profitable animated film ever.
In this new adventure, everyone’s favorite heroine embarks on a journey that takes her to the treacherous waters at the edge of the Pacific islands’ seas. With the help of Maui, a brand-new crew, and her loyal animal friends Pua and Heihei, Moana sets out to rediscover Motufetū Island, which centuries ago, served as a meeting ground for explorers to gather, learn from each other, and share their experiences.
Fans won’t have to wait another eight years to see more of the Polynesian heroine’s adventures. According to Daniel PRK, a third installment in Moana and Maui’s adventures is reportedly already in the works at Disney. While not yet officially confirmed by the studio, this news makes sense given the film’s box office success and is unlikely to surprise those who saw it first.
Does the Post-Credits Scene Hint at a Sequel?
Warning, this article contains spoilers about “Moana 2.”
Indeed, the post-credits scene in “Moana 2” suggests that a third film may already be in the pipeline. In this scene, Nalo, the God of Storms and the film’s main antagonist, makes his first appearance. Visibly upset about how Moana ended his curse on the ocean, the physically imposing god, with eyes flashing purple lightning, vows revenge against the two heroes.
At that moment, Tamatoa, the giant crab obsessed with shiny objects seen in the first film, reappears to ally with Nalo and expresses his own desire for revenge against Moana and Maui. Thus, the scene sets the audience up with a new alliance between Moana’s enemies, united by a common goal. The post-credits scene of “Moana 2” is crucial for the future of the franchise, far from being a mere comedic wink; it has a direct impact on the storyline’s future, laying the groundwork for the next chapters in Moana and Maui’s story and setting the stage for new adventures.
When asked by Deadline about the possibility of a third “Moana” movie at the film’s American premiere, director Dana Ledoux Miller (who is also co-writing the current live-action version) said: “Let’s get the second one out and we’ll see,” before adding that she hoped “not to have to wait another eight years for another sequel.”
“Moana 2” is currently in theaters.
