Rated 4.3/5, This Cult Series is So Realistic It’s Saved Lives!

Seasons 3 through 8 of “House M.D.” are leaving Prime Video on December 29, and here’s a fascinating story that might just convince you it’s the greatest medical drama of all time!

The iconic series created by David Shore in 2004 needs no introduction: 8 seasons, 20 Emmy Awards, 8 Golden Globes, and the title of the most-watched series globally in 2008. More than just a critical and popular success, “House M.D.” revolutionized television. By blending elements of detective shows and comedy with medical drama, it completely refreshed a genre often overlooked: the “hospital drama.”

Unlike “Grey’s Anatomy,” which primarily uses the hospital setting as a backdrop for romantic plots, “House M.D.” took a more serious approach to medicine, making it a dramatic, philosophical, and occasionally comedic element of the show. This near-documentary style was praised by the medical community for its accuracy and even helped save lives.

The Best Medical Drama Ever?

You may have already considered “House M.D.” to be more realistic than its peers, but the extent of its accuracy might still surprise you. The story we’re about to share occurred in Germany in 2012 and was even featured in an article in the prestigious journal The Lancet. It highlights the show’s meticulous attention to medical symptom accuracy.

In May 2012, a 55-year-old man was admitted to the hospital in Marburg suffering from severe heart failure, high fever, hypothyroidism, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. The internal medicine – cardiology and center for undiagnosed diseases team took on his case.

After several unsuccessful diagnostic attempts, the patient’s condition worsened; he was nearly deaf and blind, and time was of the essence. That’s when one of the doctors had a revelation. He recalled an episode from “House M.D.” used in medical training, where a patient exhibited similar symptoms. Quickly, he played episode 11 of season 7, titled “Family Practice.” The diagnosis in the show? Severe cobalt poisoning. The Marburg hospital team tested for this and confirmed it. The patient’s life was saved.
