Did you know that HBO initially rejected “Yellowstone,” deeming the series outdated and unwatchable? Today, Taylor Sheridan’s Western is a global phenomenon. Here’s a look back at HBO’s missed opportunity and Paramount’s stroke of genius.
Now regarded as a massive television success, “Yellowstone” might have had a very different fate. Before becoming a staple on the Paramount Network, the series created by Taylor Sheridan was almost picked up by another titan of American television: HBO. However, this opportunity never materialized, as recounted by its creator.
Known for hosting some of the most iconic productions of recent decades, including “The Sopranos,” “Game of Thrones,” and “The Last of Us,” HBO unexpectedly passed on the “Yellowstone” project.
A Project Deemed Unpromising
In an interview with Cowboys & Indians magazine, Taylor Sheridan discussed the hurdles he faced when pitching his series to networks. After submitting scripts for the first two episodes, the screenwriter thought he was on the right track. However, the network ultimately decided not to continue with the project.
The creator asked HBO for an explanation: “When I asked them why, they told me: ‘Nobody wants to see this. Nobody wants to see a series about this topic.’”
This response clearly left an impression on him, especially considering the series’ subsequent success.
HBO’s Critique of the Series’ Setting
In another conversation with The Hollywood Reporter in 2023, Taylor Sheridan elaborated on the reasons given for the rejection. According to him, the network felt that the series’ setting did not align with its editorial line or its image as a trailblazer.
“We are HBO, we are at the forefront, we set trends. This feels like a step backward. And frankly, I’ll be honest: I don’t think anyone should live there [in rural Montana]. It should be a park or something like that.”
Paramount, a Risky Bet Turned Winner
After this setback, Taylor Sheridan turned to other potential partners. It was Paramount that ultimately decided to take a chance on the project and quickly support its production. At that time, the network was still not as established as other premium channels and was in fact looking to revamp its image.
Sheridan remembers a broadcaster in transition, still low-key but eager to make a significant leap.
“At that time, Paramount was really trying to reposition itself, moving from a smaller channel to a premium cable network. But I wasn’t really sure. (…) They were eager to do it, and it was as difficult as I had said, as costly and demanding. But they trusted me. There were a few times, I believe, when they nodded and looked down. But they never said stop.”
A Television Phenomenon That Became Unmissable
The gamble ultimately paid off. Since its debut, “Yellowstone” has become one of the most popular series in the United States. Its universe has even expanded significantly with several spin-offs already aired, including the prequels “1883” and “1923,” as well as the sequels “Marshals,” which premiered in March last and focuses on Kayce Dutton (played by Luke Grimes), and “Dutton Ranch,” which started on May 15 and centers on the couple Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler (Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser). More projects are still in the works.
In hindsight, HBO’s refusal appears to be a strategic mistake: contrary to initial predictions, “Yellowstone” has indeed found its audience – and millions of loyal followers worldwide.
All five seasons of the show are now available on Paramount+. Netflix also streams its first four seasons.
