Freida McFadden’s Hit Novels, Including “The Maid,” Set for Screen Adaptation!

Last night, Lionsgate announced the film adaptation of the sequel to Freida McFadden’s bestselling novel, “The Housekeeper”. On this occasion, we take a look at all the planned adaptations of works by the American novelist.

“The Housekeeper”, adapted from Freida McFadden’s bestseller by Paul Feig, has been in theaters since December 24, 2025. Starring Amanda Seyfried, Sydney Sweeney, and Brandon Sklenar, the film has already drawn over 1.3 million viewers in France. Globally, it has earned more than 95 million dollars at the box office since its release.

Logically, the sequel – adapting the second novel in the trilogy, “The Secrets of the Housekeeper” – has been officially confirmed by Lionsgate.

In development for several months, the project will see Sydney Sweeney returning as Millie, the titular housekeeper, along with Michele Morrone as Enzo, the gardener from the first film. Though his role was minor in the first movie, he becomes a central character in the sequel.

Paul Feig is expected to return as director, while Rebecca Sonnenshine, the screenwriter for the first film, is also back on script duties.

In the sequel, Millie lands a new job as a housekeeper in a luxurious New York apartment. Soon, she begins to notice some troubling signs… Her boss’s mood is increasingly erratic, and his wife is constantly locked in their bedroom. Millie uncovers the dark secrets of the couple and once again relies on Enzo’s help.

Adaptation of the Third Book?

If the sequel proves successful on screen, an adaptation of the third novel in the trilogy, “The Housekeeper Sees All“, set ten years later, could be considered.

Following her blockbuster success in bookstores, Freida McFadden is also making waves in cinemas. It is worth noting that the American author has sold over 7 million books in France and over 10 million in the United States, with France being her second-largest market.

The “Housekeeper” trilogy is among the top-selling books this holiday season, according to the site Edistat.

With the official announcement of “The Secrets of the Housekeeper”, let’s explore all other film and streaming adaptations announced based on the work of the prolific novelist.

Other Planned Adaptations

Apple TV+ is developing an adaptation of the novel “The Teacher”, with the screenplay currently being written by Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg, and co-produced by Freida McFadden (according to Deadline). The director and cast are yet to be announced.

Published in February 2024, “The Teacher” is a psychological thriller that follows Eve, a high school math teacher, who begins to suspect Addie, a manipulative student involved in a past scandal with a former teacher. The plot thickens when Nate, Eve’s husband and also a teacher, befriends Addie, triggering a series of twists and secrets that reveal a dark and complex tale of revenge.

No release date has been announced yet for the platform.

In September, Deadline reported that Amazon is adapting the novel “Dear Debbie” into a series, produced by Gina Girolamo (of You, Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin fame).

The book, expected in French bookstores on January 27, follows Debbie, a wife, mother, and brilliant columnist, who decides to take matters into her own hands after a series of injustices push her toward a path of vengeance. No casting has been announced yet.

Amazon MGM Studios has also acquired the adaptation rights to the novel “The Tenant”, expected in bookstores on February 11, 2026.

The story follows Blake, who, after being abruptly fired, struggles to keep up with mortgage payments on the house he shares with his fiancée. The solution? Taking in a tenant to help cover expenses. Whitney seems to perfectly fit the profile: friendly, charming, serious. The ideal tenant… at first glance.

However, something soon feels off. A foul smell permeates the house, strange noises wake Blake in the middle of the night, and he begins to fear that someone will uncover his darkest secrets. Danger has infiltrated his home and, by the time he realizes it, it’s too late: the trap has already sprung…

Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt will produce the film adaptation, in collaboration with Molly Sims, with Freida McFadden serving as executive producer. No casting or release date has been announced yet.

Finally, Sony Pictures has acquired the rights to the novel “The Surrogate”, yet unpublished in France. The screenplay will be adapted by Anna Klassen.

The story follows Abby, who, after years of unsuccessful infertility treatments, accepts her personal assistant Monica’s offer to become her surrogate. However, it quickly becomes clear that Monica is not who she claims to be. Harboring an unspeakable secret, she is willing to do whatever it takes to get what she wants…

No actors have been announced yet.

These adaptations confirm that Freida McFadden has quickly established herself as a notable author, with stories that blend psychological thriller and domestic suspense. Her novels feature complex characters, often manipulative or ambiguous women, capable of concealing unspeakable secrets and turning daily life into a genuine thriller. It remains to be seen if the upcoming adaptations will meet the same success as “The Housekeeper”, currently in theaters.
