Was Keanu Reeves ever abducted by two attractive young women? This scenario unfolds in the thrilling “Knock Knock,” a nearly decade-old film that blends humor with a sinister twist. It’s definitely worth a quick revisit.
Nowadays, when you think of Keanu Reeves, you probably picture him as the formidable ex-hitman John Wick, a role he has been portraying since 2014 across several movies. But do you recall that just a year before John Wick, the Canadian actor found himself kidnapped by two beautiful young women in a thriller that was as comedic as it was dark? Let’s dive back into the delightfully horrifying comedy-thriller Knock Knock, available on myCANAL.
Released in French theaters in 2013 with a warning for viewers under twelve, the superb Knock Knock, directed by Eli Roth (Hostel), tells the story of Evan, a man who seemingly has it all: a loving family and a career he cherishes. One weekend, his wife and kids leave him home alone, swamped with work. That’s when Bel and Genesis, two young women, knock on his door needing to make a phone call. Soon after, they begin to seduce him…
Knock Knock is a mix of humor, darkness, sex appeal, subversion, fear, and suspense, led by an out-of-character Keanu Reeves and a female duo featuring Ana de Armas and Lorenza Izzo (Eli Roth’s own daughter!). This film marks Roth’s fifth directorial effort, in which he chose to veer away from pure horror towards the thriller genre. “I wanted to create an erotic, psychological thriller, something along the lines of Basic Instinct or an old Polanski film,” the filmmaker explains.
Eli Roth Draws on His Experiences with Tarantino and Brad Pitt!
With Knock Knock, Eli Roth aimed to showcase how fragile the world people spend their lives building can be. “Evan thinks he’s always in control—that’s his critical mistake,” the director notes. “People in their forties have no clue about the damage that can be done on social media because they’ve never had to think that way. Nowadays, teenagers are aware from a young age that someone’s life can be ruined with just a photo or a text message. Thus, they know exactly how to take someone down. It’s a skill that teens must develop today, but it’s completely foreign to someone like Evan.”
How did Eli Roth handle directing a major star like Keanu Reeves (who, during filming, gave Ana de Armas the best advice at the perfect moment)? He drew from his acting experience on the set of Inglourious Basterds, where Quentin Tarantino directed the likes of Brad Pitt. “The director-to-movie-star relationship is fascinating,” observes Roth. “I remember how Tarantino approached Brad Pitt and Christoph Waltz during Inglourious Basterds, and I tried not to treat them differently while still being respectful… Great actors present you with significant challenges.”
Your challenge is to quickly rediscover this thrilling gem that is Knock, Knock! Knock, knock… Did you hear that? It’s waiting just for you!
